As most of us are aware, Endometriosis affects more than 5 million women and teens in the United States alone with nearly 80 million more worldwide. The good news is, more and more patients are becoming partners in their own healthcare, empowering themselves with knowledge from sources in addition to their healthcare provider: reputable and credible e-health websites, medical journals, peer-reviewed research publications and accurate books. One such publication is the newly-released "Coping with Endometriosis," by Glenda Motta, R.N., M.P.H., and Robert Phillips, Ph.D.
"Coping with Endometriosis" is a wonderful book for several reasons. First, it encompasses all aspects of the disease: fertility, managing pain and fatigue, the immune system, diet, exercise and nutrition, alternative treatments, medications, procedures, the latest research and treatment options, resources; and an important, often-overlooked aspect: the emotional concerns of life with Endometriosis.
One particular reason the book is so well done is because the co-author is not only a medical professional, but also an Endometriosis patient herself. No one, except those who live with the disease, could ever put into words what life with Endometriosis is truly like. I had the pleasure of meeting Glenda Motta in person earlier this year at an Endometriosis event and discussing the then-unreleased book with her. She told me, "I understand the unique needs of women with Endometriosis, having lived with this disease since my pre-teen years. My goal is to educate and empower women suffering with Endometriosis to take charge and live their lives fully."
The authors have also collaborated on a unique accompaniment to "Coping with Endometriosis." "Successful Living With Endometriosis" is a motivating action workbook that provides simple yet effective strategies for living well in spite of this disease. The page by page guide takes a positive, empowering approach to help Endometriosis patients improve their emotional and social well-being, including techniques to help enhance self-esteem, improve relationships with family, friends, colleagues and their doctors.
Glenda told me, "these two books present an easy-to-read format that Endometriosis patients of all levels can understand. The books are helpful for patients, but also include materials for families and significant others. Currently, there is a lot of information on Endometriosis available, but it is scattered and sometimes inaccurate. My goal is to take all the current, legitimate information and put it all together - medical, surgical, alternative treatments, anatomy, causes, coping strategies, real-life examples, dealing with healthcare professionals, diet and lots more."
She and Dr. Phillips have done just that. Not since the "Endometriosis Sourcebook" have there been such well-written resources available to the Endometriosis community. Easy to understand, educational and empowering, I highly recommend obtaining your copy of both of these excellent publications today!
